Last year’s Mom Makeover Winner, Chris Bird
Dozens of women of all ages and stages entered the 2009 Mom Makeover contest. Chris Bird was chosen because of her particular circumstances. After relocating from St. Louis to Denver for her husband, Danny’s job, Danny was diagnosed with cancer. Although Danny beat cancer, he was put on disability for a year sending Chris back into the work force.
After professional organizers helped the Birds organize their home, and a makeover artist worked with her ‘look’, Chris started her work with Gretchen Reid. Gretchen helped Chris tap into lost passions and uncover her natural strengths to discover a new career in social media. She helped her rewrite her resume to make it marketable, provided networking and job hunting tips, and even helped Chris and Danny clarify their expectations of each other in order to make their transition more manageable.
Chris’ perspective on her work with Gretchen:
“Getting past ‘my stuff’ became the next hurdle, and that’s where motherhood and career guru, Gretchen Reid of Motherhood Transitions, came in. In addition to re-working my resume, Gretchen helped me to identify the negative talk in my head that can block possible positive events from occurring. I was allowing my own ‘mom-guilt’ about no longer being a full-time mom for my daughter and my fear of a jobless economy among other things, steer me into a self-perpetuating anger and frustration at my situation. She also helped me to see what is possible from the experience instead of dwelling on what was supposed to be. Together we assessed my professional strengths and she opened my eyes to new possibilities in a career path. A career that I had so much as thrown by the wayside was beginning to be revived and I was suddenly excited about it again, but now with a new twist. I have since become a fervent student of social media marketing and am combining my writing, design, advertising and marketing skills with the new media to offer a complete marketing solutions to clients.”
~ Chris Bird
What is Chris doing today?
Chris started her own blog, creatively named Mama Bird’s Blog: Transitioning from nest to desk. After working from home for six months honing her skills, Chris was offered a full-time contract position. She is now thrilled to report that she is building her own business in social media, serving a number of clients to increase thier visibility and sales numbers through creative marketing…all while balancing work, marriage and motherhood. While this 3 ring circus is not an easy task, Chris is handling it like a pro. This experience has challenged both Chris and Danny, as the forced switching of roles has proven to be rewarding for both, and positive for thier daughter as well. This is a true success story of a woman taking action to do what is best for her family and for herself. When I spoke with her this afternoon she stated, “I have you to thank for setting me on this path. I could not have done it without you!”
